You Don’t Need a New Laptop
Resources and guidance for students who are looking for new hardware for their CS/DS/AI studies. Our resources are for everyone, with a focus on supporting students on tighter budgets and on reducing e-waste by giving perfectly usable machines a second life.
What We Do
Software
We host workshops on installing Linux distributions with a lightweight desktop environment or window manager, and we share tips for daily Linux usage.
Hardware
We share Purdue-specific information. For example, the Purdue Surplus Store is currently selling many retired Dell Latitude E7450 and E7470 laptops. We offer resources on how to look for a usable model, common problems, and do-it-yourself fixes.
Why It Matters
While the resources are for everyone, our primary goal is to support students with tighter budgets. There is also an aspect of reducing e-waste and recycling perfectly usable machines. We also hope to talk with the department about creating a marketplace for retired CS machines.
